How it works

1

Pick your states

Every state you, your parents or your business have lived or worked in. Each state holds its own list.

2

Search the official site

We link straight to each state's program, plus the free multi-state search at MissingMoney.com.

3

Claim it, free

File on the state's site. Most claims need a photo ID and proof of an old address. Want help staying organized? Try our optional kit.

Did your name come up?

When a state search shows money in your name, tell us how much (optional, it stays on your device) and celebrate a little.

You found money!

Next, file your claim on the state's own site. It's free. Most states will ask for a photo ID and proof of the address they have on file.

Questions

Is this a government website?

No. We are an independent, privately run site. We link you to each state's official unclaimed property program, and that is where you search and claim.

Does it cost anything to claim my money?

No. Every state lets you search and claim for free. Our optional claim kit is a convenience product with checklists, a ready-to-sign cover letter and guides. You never need it to get your money, and we never take a percentage of your claim.

What about MissingMoney.com?

MissingMoney.com is a free search endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) that covers most participating states at once. It is a great place to start. Some states are best searched on their own site, which is why we link to each one.

How common is unclaimed property?

NAUPA estimates that about 1 in 7 people have unclaimed property held by a state.

What kinds of money end up unclaimed?

Common examples are old bank accounts, uncashed paychecks or refund checks, utility deposits, insurance payouts, stock dividends and the contents of safe deposit boxes.

Can I claim money for a relative who passed away?

Usually, yes, if you are the legal heir or the estate representative. States typically ask for a death certificate and proof that you are entitled to it. Our family kit walks you through gathering those papers, but the state decides each claim.

Someone offered to recover my money for a percentage. Should I sign?

You can almost always claim it yourself for free, so read any finder's agreement carefully before signing. Some states limit the fees finders can charge. We never offer finder-fee contracts.

Do you store my name?

No. The name you type stays in your browser and is only used to show your links. See our privacy page.
